Beijing Jiaotong University is a national key university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education and now is jointly supported by the Ministry of Education, the China Railway Corporation and Beijing Municipal Government. BJTU is one of the first universities selected into the “National 211 Project” and the “985 Innovative Platforms for Key Disciplines Project”, one of the first institutions authorised to confer Master’s and Doctoral degrees. BJTU, as the leading organisation, has established the Collaborative Innovation Centre for Rail Transit Safety, which is one of the first 14 collaborative centres selected by the Chinese government into the “National 2011 Projects”. In 2017, BJTU was selected into the “Double First-Class” National Initiative. BJTU will surround the advantaged disciplines and focus on building “Smart Transportation” as a world-class discipline.
BJTU has the East and West campuses in Haidian District with total area of nearly 67 hectares. In September 2015, the Weihai Campus of BJTU in Weihai, Shandong Province came into service. In 2019, a comprehensive R & D experimental base for coastal rail transit of Beijing Jiaotong University was built in Huanghua City, Hebei Province. Tangshan Research Institute was established in Tangshan City, Hebei Province to build a demonstration area for technology research and development, achievement transformation and international education and training.In January 2022, Weihai Institute of Beijing Jiaotong University was set up in Nanhai, Weihai. All campuses have complete teaching and research facilities and beautiful environments.
Weihai campus is invited by Weihai Municipal People's government. In order to adapt to the development of National Blue Economic Zone and the need of further building a perfect regional national education system, it carries out high-level and international education in Nanhai New Area of Weihai with the mode of “building a nest to attract Phoenix”. On November 26, 2013, Weihai Municipal People's government and Beijing Jiaotong University signed the “strategic cooperation agreement between Weihai Municipal People's government and Beijing Jiaotong University”. And on September 28, 2014, the two sides signed an agreement on the establishment and co construction of Weihai International College of Beijing Jiaotong University. Weihai City provides 74.1 hectares of land for the overall planning and construction of Weihai campus, and is equipped with basic school running equipment. The planned total building area is 226000 square meters, which is completed in two phases.
Beijing Jiaotong University attaches great importance to the development and construction of Weihai campus, taking Weihai campus as the main position of Sino foreign cooperation in running schools, the training base for international teaching staff, the experimental area for comprehensive reform of the University and the demonstration area for serving the local economic and social development. On April 19, 2015, the Ministry of Education officially approved the construction of Weihai Campus of Beijing Jiaotong University, and began to recruit students in the same year. On December 18, 2015, the Weihai municipal organization preparation committee approved Beijing Jiaotong University to establish a public institution - Beijing Jiaotong University (Weihai). In 2016, the National Physics Experiment Teaching Demonstration Center (Weihai) was launched into Weihai campus, and was awarded the “science popularization education base” in Weihai in September. In 2017, it was awarded as the core socialist value practice education base for minors in Weihai City, and the comprehensive practice base of Wendeng District primary and secondary schools in 2018 and Shandong science popularization education base in 2019. The teaching demonstration center not only serves the teaching needs of various majors in the campus, but also is open and shared with the society.
Weihai campus is characterized by Sino foreign cooperation in running schools. In January 2015, the undergraduate education project of information management and information system specialty jointly held by Beijing Jiaotong University and Rochester Institute of technology was approved by the Ministry of education. In September, the students of this specialty entered the campus as the first batch of students in Weihai campus. In 2018, the project successfully passed the teaching evaluation organized by the Ministry of education, and the extension has been approved by the Ministry of education until December 31, 2027.
On September 17th, 2015, Beijing Jiaotong University signed an agreement with Lancaster University of the UK on the co-construction of Lancaster University College of Beijing Jiaotong University. The project has been included in the achievements of the high-level human cultural exchange mechanism between China and the UK. The preparation of the college has been highly valued and strongly supported by the relevant departments of the two governments. The University of Lancaster University of Beijing Jiaotong University is located in Weihai campus, including communication engineering, accounting, computer science and technology, business management, environmental engineering and digital media art. In may2019, Lancaster University College of Beijing Jiaotong University successfully passed the on-site evaluation of Chinese foreign cooperative school running by the Ministry of education, and obtained the five-year exemption period for cooperative running. In 2021, the extension of school running was approved by the Ministry of education until December 31, 2029.
In 2019, the further education rate of the first undergraduates in Weihai campus is 83.96%, 20% of whom enrolled in the top 50 universities on the QS World University Rankings. In 2020, the further education rate is 68.85%, 21.64% of the students entering the top 50 universities on the QS World University Rankings.The further education rate of 2021 undergraduates is 78.06%, of which 21.94% are enrolled in the top 50 universities in the 2022 QS World University Rankings.
The multicultural atmosphere, collegiate system and association construction in campus ensure the education mechanism of all staff involving, and guarantee the inheritance and innovation of school motto “Knowing & Doing”.
Weihai campus has 13 offices: Campus President’s Office, CPC Committee Office, Office of Student Affairs and Services, Office of Academic Affairs, Office of Human Resources, Office of State-owned Assets Administration, Laboratory Centre, Office of Financial Affairs, Office of Teaching Development and International Services, Office of Campus Services, Office of External Engagement and Training, Information Technology Centre, Library. By June 2022, there are totally 141 employees in Weihai campus.
