Soil Science
Soils are the critical veneer to the surface of the Earth that provide humanity with a host of functions essential to our existence, from food production through to provision of clean air and water. This module provides grounding of the fine scale soil processes; students will learn interdisciplinary thinking that helps them connect different and complex strands of knowledge from around the Earth system.
This module aims to introduce the nature and properties of soils in an environmental context. Through a series of lectures, workshops and seminars a range of themes will be covered including an introduction to soil formation, soil chemistry and biology, and the role of soils in the cycling of nutrients
The module will also include fieldwork and the analysis of the samples soil in the laboratory.
Students will receive oral group and individual feedback in two (field and laboratory) practical exercises when students and teachers will interact together to discuss soil formation and development.
Coursework will be formally graded, annotated and returned with feedback sheets within 2 weeks of submission.
Environmental data visualisation and analysis
This module provides a range of knowledge about Environmental data visualisation and analysis, which includes: Introducation, aims of programming and basic definitions, Starting and using Matlab: scripts, toolboxes and commands, Variables and expressions, programming tools: editor/debugger, Programming control: loops and nested loops, The scientific method – working with data and hypotheses, Computer graphics and visualisation with handle graphics, More program control, and find patterns in data, and More patterns in data, statistical analysis and visualisation.
Global change and the earth system
This module provides a range of knowledge about Global change and the earth system, which includes: Module introduction and general info, Energy rebalance and circulation, Radiative forcing and transient climate response, Climate change and IPCC, The carbon cycle, long-lived GHGs and metrics, Chemistry, aerosol and climate, Natural climate forcing, Climate models, Stratospheric ozone and climate, Geoengineering.
Atmosphere, Weather and Climate
This module provides a range of knowledge about atmosphere, weather and climate, which includes: Meteorological observation, Global radiative equilibrium and meridional heat transfer, Greenhouse effect, Climate change, Climate projections and climate policy, Atmospheric pressure and temperature structure, The water cycle and clouds, and The Coriolis force and large-scale weather systems.
Aquatic Biogeochemistry
The main aim of the module is to deepen acquired knowledge in biogeochemistry and introduce students to new concepts, which have a key role in the environmental chemistry. The approach will be quantitative, with a focus on how data is generated, interpreted, and how to apply analytical quality controls. The processes will be illustrated using examples of biogeochemical cycles of various elements.
Traffic Environmental Pollution Control
The aim of this programme is to provide an understanding of the nature of traffic environmental pollution as applied to research or other investigative activity in pollution control and environmental management. Enable the student systematically to research the area of environmental pollution via the literature and create an ordered structured report on a subject of relevance to the course and their own interests. Develop students' experimental skills in traffic pollution control. Meet the needs of employers that require an ability to bring sound science and current thinking to traffic environmental problems.
On completion of this module students will be able to: Understand the traffic laws and regulations. Describe the distribution, causes and effects of various traffic environmental pollution , and methods of monitoring, controlling , giving appropriate examples. Master the main environmental pollution problems of rail transit and the technical methods to solve the environmental problems of transportation.
Environmental Monitoring and practical
Environmental Monitoring and practical is one of the main courses for the undergraduates majored in Environmental Engineering. It is theoretical as well as practical. Having learned this, students may have a command of the technologies of monitoring air, water, soil, noise and the usage of experiment instruments. We aim on helping students cultivate their serious scientific attitude and their ability to analyze problems and finally solve them.

Air Pollution Control Engineering and Experiment
This is an introductory course to air pollution covering a wide range of topics. In this course, you will learn the impacts of air pollutants on human beings and the environment, what their sources are, and their physical and chemical behavior in the atmosphere. In addition, This course focuses on the basic theory of air pollution control, the basic principles of the various control methods, the typical structural features of the control equipment, as well as the typical process and equipment design and some topics about the latest achievements and trends of air pollution control.
Combined with the air pollution control engineering experiments and course project design, this course will cultivate the ability of students to analyze and solve practical problems. A necessary foundation will be built for students to perform scientific research and technical management in future.
Water Quality Engineering and Experiment II
The Water Quality Engineering II is the core course of environmental engineering, water supply and drainage engineering. Through the study of this course, students will master the sewage quality characteristics, the basic concepts and biochemical reaction kinetics foundation of biological wastewater treatment, activated sludge method and the stabilization pond, biological film and sewage land treatment, anaerobic treatment, sewage advanced treatment, small sewage treatment facilities, sludge treatment and disposal technology, Nutrient recycling and waste water reuse, future challenges and opportunities for wastewater management . It lays the necessary theoretical and applied base for the students engaged in environmental engineering design, scientific research and operation management and so on.
Solid Waste Pollution Control Engineering
The main task and purpose of the course is to discuss the fundamental theory and technology of solid waste treatment and disposal, such as compaction, shredding, separation, composting, incineration, landfill .The content includes waste production, classification and management, scientific and technological principles of treatment and disposal.
Students successfully completing this course will be able to understand the laws and regulations related to solid waste, grasp solid waste treatment and disposal technology, improve their problem-solving abilities. They will get the necessary foundation for the furthermore scientific research and technology management in the solid waste treatment and disposal.
Environmental Impact Assessment, Planning and Management
Environmental impact assessment (EIA) is a specialty core course for students of Environmental science and engineering.The ultimate goal of this course is to cultivate the students to possess the basic ability to perform environmental impact assessment, planning, and management. This course focuses on providing the basic concepts of EIA, the general procedures of EIA, detailed requirements on EIA in terms of different environmental elements e.g. air, noise, water, etc.and basic concepts of environmental risk assessment.
Water Resource Management
This module introduces concepts of managing natural aquatic resources including freshwater, marine, soil- and groundwater. Water and aquatic environments are discussed as critical resources for human society, as well as providers of invaluable ecosystem services. Emerging challenges from climate change for water security and ecosystem health are explored. A series of lectures, seminars and practicals provides students with theoretical background and applied examples of water resources management within a global context.

Principles of Environmental Engineering
“Principles of Environmental Engineering” is an important professional core course in environmental engineering major, which serves as a connecting link between the preceding course and following course in the teaching of environmental engineering. This course is based on natural science principle to analysis of practical engineering and closely related with engineering practice.
This course expatiates the water treatment engineering, air pollution control engineering, solid waste treatment engineering, environmental pollution and ecological restoration engineering of all kinds of pollution control projects involving the common basic phenomena and basic process principle in industrial and daily life; it analyzes the structure and operating principle of the unit operation of typical equipment. The course also introduces the basic method of calculation for designing unit process.
One successful completion of this course, the students should be able to: (1) describe and explain the theories of mass balance, mass transfer, heat transfer and reaction kinetics; (2) use the fundamentals theories to analyse the mechanisms of unit operation processes including sedimentation, filtration, absorption and adsorption; (3) solve environmental problems with various unit operation processes by theoretical calculations; (4) evaluate and improve the performances of these unit operation processes. It helps students develop the viewpoint of engineering and the ability of analyzing and solving engineering problems, laying the foundation for the engineering designs, scientific researches and operation managements.
Hydrology: Water in the Environment
The course aims to introduce to the science of hydrology and emphasises the physical processes and their measurement. Two field trips will be used to illustrate how an understanding of hydrological and meteorological processes can be used to quantify and sometimes solve environmental problems. On completion of this module a student will be able to:
Describe and manipulate the water balance equation and the groundwater flow equation; Measure waterflows and soil/rock properties.
Environmental Analytical chemistry and experiment
Environmental analytical chemistry and experiment is one of the main courses for the undergraduates majored in Environmental Engineering. It is theoretical as well as practical. The Content include:, Quantitative Chemical Analysis , Acid-Base Titration, Complex titration , Precipitation Titration, Oxidation-Reduction Titration, Atomic Spectroscopy, Ultraviolet and Visible Spectroscopy, Infrared Spectroscopy and NMR Spectroscopy, Mass Spectrometry ,Chromatography, Electrochemical Analysis. Having learned this, students may have a command of the technologies of monitoring air, water, soil, noise and the usage of experiment instruments. Environmental Microbiology and Experiments
The course mainly discusses the role of microorganisms present in the natural or artificial environment. The purpose of the course is to provide students some fundamentals and practical applications of microorganisms in environmental pollution control. At the completion of this course, students should understand the microbial cell structure, metabolism and reproduction, evolution and genetic information transmission, the microorganisms in the microbial population dynamics, the role of microorganisms in the material cycle, microbial bioremediation and biodegradation, etc.

Physical Chemistry
Physical chemistry is the core course for environmental engineering and other majors in engineering university, where students can master basic principles and methods of physical chemistry, broaden their knowledge, set a foundation for the subsequent specialized courses and grasp the ability to resolve practical problems in environmental engineering and water supply and drainage engineering. Physical chemistry plays an important part for cultivating the basic knowledge system of physical chemistry, comprehensive design ability and practical ability of the said majors.
Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing and Image Processing
Geographic information system and remote sensing is an optional course for senior students of environmental engineering, which is a professional development course. The learning objective and task of this course is to enable learners to understand and master the theory and method of geospatial information technology, and have the basic knowledge and application skills of environmental remote sensing, which can solve the application problems of remote sensing and GIS in the field of environment. The main contents of the course include: basic concepts of GIS, geospatial reference system, spatial data structure, spatial query and statistics, spatial analysis, physical basis of remote sensing; remote sensing digital image preprocessing, remote sensing image enhancement and transformation; remote sensing image interpretation and classification; remote sensing information extraction and thematic mapping; application of remote sensing and GIS technology in the field of environment.
Environmental Functional Materials
"Smart Environmental Engineering and Management" is an elective course for the environmental majors of engineering colleges and universities. It plays an important role in cultivating students' creative thinking, comprehensive design capabilities, smart environmental engineering construction and management capabilities. The main task of this course is to cultivate students' innovative consciousness and ability and the application ability of scientific knowledge of smart environmental engineering through classroom teaching, case teaching and project research, so that students can master the basic theories, basic knowledge and basic skills of smart environmental engineering and management. Commonly used smart environment engineering design methods and general laws, have basic smart environment engineering program design capabilities, and the ability to analyze and solve problems in the management of smart environment engineering, and support the corresponding index points in the graduation requirements.
Environmental Functional Materials
"Environmental Functional Materials" is an elective course for environmental engineering majors, and a window course for understanding the application of functional materials in the environmental professional field.
The course combines basic principles and key case studies, and focuses on cultivating students' ability to serve environmental engineering with the universal principles of functional materials science, and cultivating students' interdisciplinary and innovative thinking. The course adheres to the principle of "teaching people to fish" and allows students to actively participate in classroom activities such as PPT presentations and mini-paper writing, to actively discuss and think about problems, and to develop students' ability to express themselves in professional English. The above-mentioned skills will lay an important foundation for students to engage in engineering design, scientific research and operation management of environmental engineering in the future.
Water Quality Engineering Course Design
The main aim of Water Quality Engineering Course Design is to make the students in the master the basic theory of water treatment engineering, on the basis of further grasp the main points of the water supply and sewage treatment plant engineering design, scheme comparison and so on the basic engineering design basic steps and drawing method of water supply and sewage treatment plant floor plan and flow chart, for graduation design and the actual work to lay a foundation in the future.
Solid Waste Pollution Control Engineering Course Design
This course is a practical course after students complete the study of solid waste pollution control engineering. The main purpose is to enable students to in-depth understanding of solid waste pollution control engineering principles ,to improve the ability of students analyze and solve problems, and to apply these principles to the engineering design. The main contents include solid waste disposal program, the urban garbage collection system design, urban waste transfer station engineering, engineering design of urban organic waste composting, and municipal solid waste sanitary landfill project design.
Air Pollution Control Engineering Course Design
This course mainly exercises the students' design ability, that is, to comprehensively use the existing professional knowledge base, to analyze and solve the practical engineering problems of atmospheric environment. Students after complete this course, should understand the relevant structure design specifications and standards and master, can use the professional knowledge, according to the local atmospheric environment quality, according to the design requirements, independent mining and waste gas purification of planning and design, and be able to apply modern tools to draw specification, clear planning and design.
